Avoiding Trendy

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Lisa and I have been talking a lot lately about new trends we see in wedding photography.

We have to be honest with ourselves, this is a new age of wedding photography, there is room for new ideas and cool new pictures. However, we believe in taking pictures in an elegant and honest way – one that still adheres to a photojournalistic code.

This is one reason why we avoid the heavy photoshopping and crazy processing.

It is crucially important to us that we keep honest documentation at the forefront of our mind. The pictures are for the Bride, Groom and family to help remember the wedding. We don’t try to create glamorous scenes or place the bridal party in a GQ photoshoot. Most importantly, we don’t take the pictures for our portfolio or to glamorize our work for other clients. Simple, Elegant, Classic and Honest. Those are the words that we try to adhere our work to.

Invite me to your party.

I love event photography and portraiture mixed together. The style Walcott Imaging has developed for weddings is one of the most satisfying ways to take pictures for me. It is a combination of candid and posed images all around and within places and things that are important to those I am shooting for. I try to promote locations for my portrait sessions that have interesting backgrounds and nice lighting as well as some kind of connection to the subject. It’s just another layer to the photographs. I would really like to try to bring all of these interests together by taking pictures at smaller events. Say your child is turning 1 and you were planning on getting his pictures taken to mark the event. Why not do the session on location during the party? Grandpa and Grandma might be there for a photo. Cake gets smeared all over. Portraits before and after. Family pictures. I think this would be a riot! If you do, too, invite me! I’ll do the first one for free!
